Marineland welcomed close to 500 children for a live meeting with the French Ocean Race Sailor Alexia Barrier!

For the second consecutive year, Marineland in Antibes supports Alexia Barrier in her both sporting and environmental challenges: from the Route du Rhum to the famous Vendée Globe the well-known French ocean race sailor has decided to put the ocean racing at the service of science and education, through her association 4myplanet that she created 10 years ago.

Tuesday, the 5th of November, close to 500 children from schools of the French Riviera came to Marineland to take part in a Live Meeting with Alexia Barrier and her co-skipper Joan Mulloy who connected themselves from their laboratory boat 4myplanet while racing the Transat Jacques Vabre. Sharing her experience, talking about her sailing adventure through the seas and raising awareness on the importance of preserving the oceans and the biodiversity were the purposes of the Live Meeting.

« From how long have you been a sailor? What is your best memory at sea? Which animals did you meet? » … The children had the opportunity to ask their questions and got some explanations about sailing and also about the importance of protecting marine biodiversity

Welcomed by Marineland's educationnal staff early in the morning, the children had the opportunity to discover the wonders of the marine world and to take part in workshops organized by the park on this occasion with the following topics:

  • Awareness of the environment and marine biodiversity;
  • Marine wildlife education;
  • Teaching of life-saving techniques, in collaboration with firefighters of the region;

A rich and inspiring day for all the children, who enjoyed the "ocean journey" at Marineland. They went back to school with sparkles in their eyes and the awareness that we must take care of our environment.

The objective with that kind of events involving schools and with educational kit downloadable on line to which Marineland contributed is to provide educational tools to teachers for educating children on how to protect the oceans and the marine biodiversity.
