Nice has a long, complex and turbulent history. The city of Nice did not become part of France until 1860. During the 'Belle Epoque', the city became internationally renowned because Queen Victoria and many English and Russian sovereigns and aristocrats were regular visitors. Soon after becoming French, Nice and the Baie des Anges experienced their first tourist boom following the arrival of the railway. The development of the road network, including the famous 'Nationale 7' or 'holiday road', brought international fame to the Côte d'Azur and several other coastal towns in the Alpes-Maritimes and the Var, including Saint-Tropez, Antibes, Cannes, Menton, Fréjus, Saint-Raphaël, Villefranche-sur-Mer and also the principality of Monaco. Today, access is even easier thanks to its international airport, the second most important in France after Paris.
The pebbled beaches and blue chairs of the Promenade des Anglais, the Carnival, the Niçoise salad and ‘pan bagnat’, Castle Hill, the flower market of Cours Saleya; these are just some of the gems that attract travellers from all over the world all year round.
The South of France offers endless possibilities for a weekend break or a longer holiday, whether in Nice or in any of the beautiful towns and villages that nestle between the mountains and the sea. There are numerous options for a family holiday! There is something for all ages to discover, wander around and have fun with. You can stroll past the beautiful shops, take a break in the shade or experience a drawing, music, foreign language, pastry or pottery workshop...
Enjoy the water with a dip in the sea, a little paddle-surfing or kayaking, a boat trip, a scuba dive or through a sensational animal adventure at Marineland in Antibes. Orcas, sea lions and dolphins are the stars of spectacular and thrilling shows.
Relaxing and sunbathing, visiting a museum, taking part in an art workshop, playing sports or a dolphin encounter will leave you with memories that will last a lifetime.
Discover the atmosphere and flavours of this vibrant, bustling quarter as you wander through the narrow streets of the Old Town, with its colourful houses, steep staircases and lively terraces. There you will find little shops selling souvenirs, soaps, Provençal tablecloths and olive oil. Or an ice cream parlor with some unexpected flavours. Retrace your steps and take a photograph of the Porte Fausse, the Lascaris Palace or the little market stalls. For those who like to try local specialities, socca is perfect for eating on the go. Alternatively, head to one of the many bistros and restaurants where you can take a break in the shade and gaze at the beautiful surroundings. Whether you come in summer or winter, you will enjoy the atmosphere of this old quarter, nestled at the foot of Castle Hill. In the evenings, the place is lively, cool and as charming as ever.

Nice's Château can be reached by lift, which is especially useful if you have a baby and a pram! Or you can walk up the 500 steps, whilst admiring the views and telling jokes, it's your choice. The little tourist train also makes a stop there.
Castle Hill has a large park full of trees to stroll through and a giant, refreshing waterfall to enjoy. The playground there is safe and really fun for the little ones, with roundabouts, small rocking rides and a huge wooden castle for playing hide and seek. For older children, there is a giant rope spider to climb and a large grassy field. There is a historical site with some archaeological remains perched on a craggy outcrop. The old castle was completely destroyed by Louis XIV's troops and was turned into a public garden in 1830. There are breathtaking panoramic views of the Baie des Anges and the city, from the port of Nice to the airport and beyond. In this spot, you will be sure to get the best photos and videos every time!
Whatever the season, it’s the perfect place to stay with your family, right by the sea, not far from the Promenade des Anglais and the Cours Saleya.
At noon, you can hear the traditional cannon shot that is fired every day and that echoes around every street in the city!
The beautiful hillsides behind the city are dotted with the pointy steeples of hilltop villages surrounded by fragrant vegetation and winding roads overlooking the valleys, and the mountains are quite breathtaking. From the fortified village of Saint-Paul-de-Vence, there is a splendid view of the azure-blue horizon. It’s no wonder that it has inspired painters, sculptors, poets, writers and several famous actors and actresses. The high fortress of Entrevaux, which bears the royal seal of François I, has played an important role in French history. The small village of Peillon perched atop its rocky outcrop is also impressive. Its streets are narrow and its stairs are steep, in stark contrast to the friendly locals who welcome you to this seemingly timeless village.
The countryside around it is ideal for walking, hiking or family picnics in the great outdoors.

A few kilometres from Nice, Cannes or the fragrance capital of the world, Grasse, you will find the town known as the ‘jewel’ of the Côte d'Azur. The lofty town of Antibes is both charming and enchanting, with its Fort Carré, its narrow streets steeped in history, the Picasso Museum, its Provencal market, sandy beaches and large marina, as well as the famous Cap d'Antibes with its umbrella pines, steep rocks and turquoise coves. Juan-les-Pins, with its pine forest, its famous jazz festival and its lively summer season, is just a few minutes away. With excellent rail links to all the coastal towns, bus and motorway connections and even some maritime routes, it is easy to get to Antibes-Juan-les-Pins from Italy, Nice, Toulon or Marseille. The very pleasant climate attracts thousands of holidaymakers who can also benefit from staying at the Marineland Hotel***.
Not far from here is the Sofia-Antipolis Technology Park. This 'French Silicon Valley' is home to some 2,500 scientific research companies operating in various innovative spheres, including digital technology, connected objects, telecoms, life sciences and health, and with a keen international outlook. Antibes, Sophia-Antipolis, Valbonne and the other surrounding towns are committed to a wide-ranging programme of environmental protection and education of younger generations, including sorting, recycling, clean means of transport, energy saving, etc.
For lovers of the marine world, the ‘Espace mer et littoral’ (protected sea and coastal area) is ideal. This remarkable Mediterranean natural area covering more than 2 hectares is located in the Cap d'Antibes protected area and seems to plunge into the sea. It is, above all, a real tool for environmental education. Major redevelopment work is underway and is scheduled to open to the public in September 2022 with a permanent immersive exhibition on the main Mediterranean habitats, aquariums and a new walking trail. It will even be possible to explore the wonders of the marine world through aquatic trails and snorkelling and sea-kayaking tours.
Located in the ‘Espace mer et littoral’, the Wildlife Conservation Centre takes in sea turtles that have been stranded or are in difficulty, in order to care for them and reintroduce them back into their natural environment. Unfortunately, this 'turtle hospital' is not open to the public, but children can visit a replica of the Wildlife Conservation Centre in Marineland's educational area as part of a school visit. Antibes' marine animal park is home to dolphins, orcas, sea lions, penguins, sharks and more. Animal presentations and educational activities are offered throughout the day. You can treat yourself to an encounter with some of these animals. The keepers, who are passionate professionals, will help you discover these extraordinary creatures up close. Always with animal welfare as a priority. Marineland operates in accordance with the latest professional practices and the highest European zoological standards. The many presentations and activities help us to understand how waste produced by man or overfishing can be harmful to the marine world. "Discover in one day, protect forever", is Marineland's motto. Raising awareness amongst all its visitors about the importance of protecting marine fauna and the environment in general is very important for this animal park. The Marineland Association also actively participates in raising public awareness and protecting the marine environment and carries out a range of activities to promote the conservation of marine animal species.
The Marineland animal park is a very large site covering 25 hectares by the sea. It is a great place to go for a walk, get close to extraordinary animals, have fun and find out more about different species, their habits or the threats they face. By downloading the App on your phone you can easily find your location and check when the next show is starting. Before setting off with your family, remember to plan your stay, check the timetables and book your animal encounters.
Moments of intense emotion like these may make you want to stroll through the beautifully decorated shops to choose wonderful souvenirs of the animals or Marineland itself, such as T-shirts, caps, pens, glasses, mugs and ornaments.
If you’re short on time, feel free to come back for a second visit. Some visitors like Marineland so much that they come several times a year!
Find other amusement parks just a few metres from Marineland. The little ones always enjoy Adventure Golf with its 3 mini-golf courses with its Jules Verne theme.
