The genus name, Agapornis, comes from two Greek words that mean "love" and "bird", so they are "love birds". They owe this name to their fidelity but, contrary to widespread belief, if one of the two partners dies the second survives and forms a new couple with another partner. There are 9 species that vary in color. The females lay between 4 and 6 eggs (sometimes more) which they incubate for about 3 weeks. Lovebirds feed mainly on seeds.
