This medium-sized rodent is known for its soft fur.

The domestic chinchilla comes from the crossing of these two species and is closer to the long-tailed chinchilla (chinchilla lanigera). Their fur is the densest of all terrestrial species with 20,000 hairs per cm². This explains why it was first domesticated for this fur before appearing among the NAC (new pets). Chinchillas generally have 2 litters per year and 2 babies per litter on average. Gestation lasts about 110 days.
