The Polar Bears

Les Ours Polaires Flocke et Raspoutine
The Polar Bears
The only installation of its kind in Europe, designed for conserving polar bears in their proper conditions!!
An area of 2,200 m², subdivided into 3 zones: two for living, and one for rearing young: the nursery".
A magnificent environment with sea water and fresh water pools, plants from the tundra, rocks and lakes, and waterfalls, which create shady shelters acting as ideal "lairs" for the bears.

Flocke's first bath in Marineland

Marineland marks a commitment to the conservation of endangered species
Now that its natural habitat is being destroyed by the melting ice, the polar bear is a vulnerable species. If global warming continues, more than two-thirds of the current polar bear population will have disappeared by 2050. And yet this animal is crucial to the balance of life in the Arctic (North Pole), just as penguins are to life in the Antarctic (South Pole). Over the past few years, the polar bear has become the symbol of global warming and the melting of the ice cap.

By taking in polar bears, Marineland marked its commitment to the conservation of threatened species.
The park decided to diversify its animal heritage further this year, with the aim of making people more aware of biodiversity and its fragile balance.

And so, as Marineland celebrated its fortieth anniversary, new residents made their entrance into the park. These were Flocke ("Snowflake" in English) and Rasputin, two young polar bears from Nuremberg.
To help to preserve this species, Marineland decided to launch a polar bear reproduction programme, working in collaboration with the EEP (European Breeding Programme).
Welcoming its two new inhabitants involved a colossal project designed to cater for them in every way.
To achieve it, Marineland invested no less than €3.5 million to lay out a unique facility in Europe, which was minutely studied and tailor-made to the bears' needs.
With nearly 2,200 m² of space, Flocke and Rasputin can enjoy an environment that suits them. This species is one of the few in Europe to be provided with sea water, filtered and maintained at 14°C all year round. For the two bears' comfort, an air-conditioning system has been installed in their night-time area, and most importantly, two refrigerated caves totalling 50 m², with an ice bed, have been provided for them.

A  new feature that celebrates 40 years of MARINELAND in style!

Your Marineland ticket allows to to visit this new space from the time the park opens until closing time; as from 7 May 2010.
